When the 928 was first launched in 1978, Porsche viewed it as a possible replacement for the 911. While the 911 was and is still today considered a pure sports car, the 928 was a Grand Tourer and one of few Porsche’s to feature a front engine design. Porsche engineers were able to achieve a 50/50 weight distribution by mounting a transaxle in the rear. This achievement was praised given the V8 engine layout and made the 928 an extremely well handling car with more potential for higher power output. When launched the 928 was powered by a 4.5 liter V8 that was good for 219 horsepower.
The model would go through various design improvement throughout its production run, each with increased performance. This would culminate with the release of the 928 GTS. The GTS featured the largest 928 V8 engine to date, displacing 5.4 liters and produced 345 horsepower. Updated bodywork featured re-sculpted rear fenders and larger front brakes ensured short distance stops under the most demanding circumstances. Being one of the most expensive cars on the road in its time, the 928 GTS offered sporting thrills while sitting in the lap of luxury. Production would end in 1995, but the legacy of the 928 and particularly the 928 GTS live on in the finest of sports car circles.
