HISTORY OF THE CADILLAC SERIES 62
For 1960 Cadillac began to refine some of the styling touches that made the 1959 models so iconic. Designer Ed Taylor continued the “jet plane styling” however the rear fins were shortened, but still tall enough to leave an impression. The fins also housed lighting strips with larger tail lights placed within chrome ovals at the ends of the rear bumper. On the front end, the grille was restyled and a smaller, more streamlined front bumper was fitted. The front fenders now held the addition of turn signal indicators for safety and on the interior the instrument panel was redesigned for simplicity. An incredible amount of accessories and options were available from the factory including air-conditioning, 6-way power seat and cruise control –a production first for Cadillac. With all these innovations and lavish features it came as no surprise that Car Life magazine selected the 1960 Cadillac as the “best buy in the luxury field.” For the Series 62 Cadillac offered a model for every style and family including the popular 4-door six window sedan, a 4-door four window sedan, the 2-door hardtop coupe and the stylish 2-door convertible; the most expensive of the 62 Series with a base price of $5,455. Today the 1960 Series 62 Cadillac Convertible is a cherished model by collectors and enthusiasts with highly optioned examples proving to be the most desirable.

1954 CADILLAC SERIES 60 SPECIAL FLEETWOOD USED BY MARILYN MONROE

Marilyn Monroe Marilyn Monroe Marilyn Monroe

In 1954, Cadillac undertook the first major restyling of all its models in four years. The newly designed vehicles were lower, wider and longer, with the wheelbase increasing to 133 inches for many of the lines. 1954 marked the first appearance of Cadillac’s now iconic wrap around windshield that was first seen on several experimental show cars a few years before. Cadillac’s front end was extensively reshaped with an integrated bumper and grille combination that introduced Cadillac’s famous “dollar grin.” Under the hood was Cadillac’s proven 331 cubic inch V8 that was retuned and was now good for an increased 230 horsepower. Options and amenities continued to grow in number, with 1954 marking the first appearance of power assisted brakes while the power steering system saw a decrease in ratio, to improve maneuverability, especially at low speeds. With these improvements all across the line the Fleetwood Series 60 Special looked and performed better than ever and the model continued to attract buyers of a higher caliber, thanks in part to its limousine-like stature.

The 1954 Cadillac Series 60 Special Fleetwood featured here is finished in stunning all black with a beautiful green interior. It was sold new in Idaho where in 1955 it was acquired by the Twin Falls Yellow Cab & Limousine Company. They reserved it for celebrities and other elite clientele when they visited the scenic Sun Valley area. Janet Leigh, Ann Sheridan, Lydia DuPont, and Bing Crosby are all noted as being chauffeured in this Cadillac. However, its most iconic passenger was Marilyn Monroe. During Spring of 1956 it was used to personally transport her to and from the Idaho filming locations for the movie “Bus Stop.” This Fleetwood has had some prior cosmetic attention which has started to show its age in certain places, though it remains in wonderful, presentable condition. Its great provenance makes it among one of the finest examples we have seen in many years. We are proud to offer this investment-grade 1954 Cadillac Series 60 Special Fleetwood to the most particular collector or enthusiast who desires the best. Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 17% in 2015 while posting gains of 467% over the last 10 years. HISTORY OF THE 1939 CADILLAC SERIES 61
For 1939, Cadillac took a step forward with the styling of their Series 61 which started with a sleeker die-cast grille design. The interior saw numerous improvements over previous models. The column mounted “syncromatic gearshift” lever and dashboard hinged emergency brake lever improved interior space for more legroom and headroom. To highlight the cars noticeably lower stance, running boards became optional. Larger windows increased the driver’s view which increased safety and allowed for a streamlined dashboard that blended the instruments and controls effortlessly into the design. These improvements caught the attention of the American public as Cadillac noticed increasing sales versus the previous years. Power was provided by the 346ci flathead V8 engine that was machined to the highest possible standards and provided a smooth 135hp. The Series 61 was offered in four standard designs for 1939: the four-door touring sedan, four-door convertible sedan, two-door coupe and the sleek two-door convertible coupe. Rear folding opera seats were offered on the two-door Series 61 variants, improving appeal without sacrificing style. Only 5,913 Series 61 Cadillacs were assembled for 1939 though the appearance of the 1939 convertible coupe has made the model highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.
