There is much debate to what the definition of a street rod is. “The term seems first to have appeared in the late 1930s in southern California, where people raced modified cars.”[source ] Furthermore, different states in the U.S. don’t always agree on what is considered a street rod. In Colorado and Wyoming, a street rod is “any 1948 or later vehicle that is a minimum of 25 years old, or was built to resemble a vehicle like this.” Iowa and Kentucky considers a street rod “any motor vehicle weighing less than 10,000 pounds and either manufactured before 1949, or assembled or completely reconstructed using new or used parts to look like a vehicle from that period.” In Pennsylvania a street rod is defined as “any motor vehicle that is a 1948 or older model and has altered parts. Its registered weight or gross weight should not be over 9,000 pounds.”
However, street rods have gained such popularity because many drivers prefer to customize their vehicles. Whether they modify the engine by tuning or replacing it with a more powerful one, or removing and adding convertible tops, hoods, bumpers or tires, the street rod gave the effect of a more tailored car and much more user friendly.
The early street rods were old cars, usually Fords and very often the classic 1932 Ford Model B. The Model B is considered by most the classic American car, and the street-rodders, or the “hot-rodders” as they are sometimes coined, know it as the “Little Deuce Coupe”.
