There were only 771 examples of the Series 1.5 Roadster ever made. The Series 1 1/2 added many improvements in drivability including a 4.2-liter engine upgrade and improved synchromesh gearbox. The cockpit was enlarged and the convertible top was more leak-proof. The cooling system increased in capacity which eliminated overheating in warm climates. The 1968 Jaguar Series 1½ E-Type shares the desirable 4.2-liter engine and remarkable body style with its predecessor, the Series I. However, this model, which fell between the Series I and Series II, featured open headlights, twin Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, twin cooling fans and adjustable seats. Although the Series 1½ shares the Series Is body style, the model which was inducted into the Museum of Modern Arts permanent exhibit, it is actually a transitional series. Far fewer of the Series 1½ were actually manufactured from 1967-68. At only 1,942 units, with 771 being convertibles this particular model is one of the most rare E-Types produced since its premiere in 1961.
