HISTORY OF THE 1977 CHEVROLET CORVETTE: 1977 marked the first year in over a decade that the Stingray nameplate would not appear anywhere on the car. Otherwise, most changes were fairly modest and mainly hidden (such as a steel hood reinforcement) or inside the car. The exterior also featured new crossed-flags emblems between the headlamps and on the fuel filler door. A thinner, blacked-out pillar gave the windshield and side glass a more integrated look. Inside the cabin, the console was restyled in an aircraft-type cluster design, with individual-look gauges. A voltmeter replaced the former ammeter. Also on the dash, “Door Ajar” and “Headlamp Up” warning lights were abandoned. New HVAC controls, an ashtray, and a lighter were installed on the horizontal surface. One could now find a recessed picket behind the shift lever. The new console additionally featured power window switches. A first for Corvette, “Dynasty” horizontal-ribbed cloth upolstry was framed with leather, but all-leather was still an option. The Custom interior was now a standard feature. The steering wheel was leather-wrapped. Dooor panel inserts were satin finish black instead of the wood grain, and both the instrument panel as well as the door trim panels lost their embossed stich lines. Powertrains were the same as in 1976, but power brakes and steering were now standard. Only 6,148 Corvettes came with the special L82 V-8 engine, and a mere 2,060 came with the optional M21 Close-Ratio manual 4-speed transmission.
