History of the BMW 2002
BMW had been considering a 2-door coupe model as early as 1963 and quickly realized they could shorten the New Class sedan model introduced in 1962. Director of design, Wilhelm Hofmeister, tasked Georg Betram and Mafred Rennen to design the new car, while Hofmeister oversaw the interior. The final design featured the New Class sedan shape with only two doors, a slightly different front end, and a shortened wheelbase of 98.4 inches. Power was derived from the 1,600cc sedan engine and thus the model was called the 1600-2 upon its 1966 release. Not long after, two separate BMW employees decided to upgrade their 1600 coupes with 2,000cc engines. After a chance meeting at the factory with their 2-liter 2-doors, a formal proposal was made to the company’s board of directors to mass produce the model. At the same time importer Max Hoffman was pressuring BMW to produce a more powerful 02 Series Coupe as both the motoring press and the American public had started a love affair with the 1600-2. The aptly named 2002 debuted in 1968 with a 100 horsepower 1,990cc single overhead cam engine. It received rave reviews and production lasted until 1975 when the 3-Series Coupe made its debut. To this day, the 2002 remains a popular model with BMW collectors and enthusiasts.
